Part 6Fundraising, Category Creation, and Company Narrative

Why-now needs more than “AI got better”

Why market readiness, workflow digitization, labor pressure, cost curves, and buyer behavior matter as much as model capability.

Note 22 of 32 1 min read By Chandan Kolaparthi

Many AI pitches use the same why-now:

LLMs are finally good enough.

That is true, but not enough.

A strong why-now explains why the market can adopt now, not only why the technology can exist now.

Strong why-now narratives combine several shifts

  • Model capability improved.
  • Inference cost changed.
  • APIs and tooling matured.
  • Workflows became more digitized.
  • Buyers became more familiar with AI.
  • Labor pressure increased.
  • Data availability improved.
  • Existing software created structured rails.
  • Customer expectations shifted.
  • Competitive pressure made speed more valuable.
  • Regulation or compliance changed the workflow.

The strongest why-now usually sits at the intersection of technology, market behavior, and operational pressure.

Example

For AI voice agents in freight, the why-now is not only that voice AI is better.

It is that:

  • Freight workflows already rely heavily on phone conversations.
  • Brokerages face call spikes that humans cannot handle cleanly.
  • Margins are tight, so small improvements matter.
  • Verification data exists and can be used in the workflow.
  • Voice quality, latency, and transcription have improved enough to make the experience usable.
  • Buyers already feel the cost of missed calls and slow response.

That is a much stronger why-now.
